Whangarei, New Zealand - home of Northland's only city, the stunning Tutukaka Coast, the magical white sands of Bream Bay and Waipu Cove, the mountain-framed Whangarei Heads and the remote rugged coastline of Helena Bay and Oakura.

Whangarei (pronounced fung a ray) is located 2 hours north of Auckland and 1 hour south of the Bay of Islands. Whangarei is a comfortable drive from Auckland Airport after a long flight and offers an extensive range of accommodation for your first and last days of your vacation in New Zealand (plus more days in between). This community of 70,000 people provides travellers with all the convenience of an international holiday destination. The city lies across a valley adjoining the beautiful Whangarei Harbour and is surrounded by lush green hills and volcanic farmland.

Not far from the city you can find over 300 beaches, most with pristine white sand and only a few visitors. Outdoor lovers are spoilt for choice when it comes to walkways, surfing, diving, fishing, kayaking, mountain biking, golf and horse-riding. You can't beat the wide range of  sub-tropical gardens, fresh local produce and dry-stone walled roadways.

It's hard to make quick recommendations for holiday makers visiting Whangarei because there is so much choice. Whangarei has something for everyone so read more about what's on offer in our Whangarei accommodation, driving routes, land-based activities, water-based activities, activities for kids and dining pages.

Whangarei may not look much when you drive along State Highway 1 (what city does from the main road!), so resist the urge to keep going because Whangarei is a travellers' paradise - especially for those looking for down-to-earth Kiwi hospitality, great food and outstanding outdoor experiences that aren't in all the guide books.
